Neuropsychiatric outcomes of patients with encephalitis: A case series with long-term follow-up

Objective: The long-term course of neuropsychiatric, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms that develop after encephalitis has not been studied adequately. We aimed to investigate the progression these in a case series patients followed up encephalitis. Method: Patients were evaluated through neurological psychiatric assessments, as well cranial magnetic resonance imaging electroencephalography recordings at baseline. Neuropsychiatric outcomes assessed using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Frontal Behavior Inventory (FBI), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), (NPI), Katz Activities Daily Living (Katz ADL) Index Scale, Lawton Instrumental (IADL) Scale. Results: A total 15 baseline 10 them had follow-up assessment median 60 months. with active epilepsy worse ADL scores than those complete seizure control. MMSE negatively correlated FBI + IADL scores. While did change significantly assessment, there was decrease FBI, HDRS, NPI scores, an improvement Conclusion: Our suggest control, high absence frontal are associated less dependence on others activities daily living overall cognitive status who recovered from unchanged long term.
